Petrified wood is the fossilized remains of terrestrial vegetation. It is the result of a tree having turned completely into stone by the process of permineralization. This means that all of the organic materials have been replaced with minerals.
The petrification process occurs underground, when wood becomes buried under sediment, such as volcanic ash or mud, and is preserved due to a lack of oxygen, inhibiting aerobic decomposition. The different minerals in groundwater are what give petrified wood a variety of color ranges. (You're in luck -there will NOT be a test on this.)
