@jospar yes. related to that, but if referring to a shoe as a dress shoe i would say it was meant for a dress situation. i.e: to be worn with a morning suit, tuxedo or tail suit. brown shoes would not be acceptable in any of these scenarios. @R06U3 my comment was a statement, not an argument. to see it as anything else would be facile. in reference to your second comment, no it doesn't it comes down to tradition.
mmm it was a statement which expanded into a discussion based on your post. if you had not commented it would have remained a statement. what would you consider a dress situation at which a brown shoe would be ok? @R06U3

@R06U3 aaah..... GQ thats where it all went wrong. thanks for the info. i think you just proved my point by using semi formal and not dress occasions to illustrate your incorrect point.
ummm... no i don't think so? my original statement was regarding these shoes being referred to as "dress" shoes. this was the point of my comment.
I agree the no brown in town is out dated, and many people here in town (London)wear brown shoes for informal occasions. But not with tails nor with black tie.
you say things like "not all dress events require black shoes", but have failed to provide an instance to illustrate this. i do not adhere to no brown in town, but then i havent been supporting it as a style must. my favourite comment is the most recent tho "classic style rules have evolved". no. classic style rules are still what they were, this is what makes them "classic" you simply are choosing to ignore them. which is absolutely fine.
The real hot topic should be what socks to wear with them? Fila or Nike?
... forget what's appropriate ... make your own rules ... it's more interesting ...
i believe fila are good for bar mitzvahs and nike for job centre employees. @wasoncedead
