not only mexicans, in my country many people used to hang trasparent pkastic bags filled wuth water to keep fliies away. I am not really sure if it works...
bulb design is a very good idea. why not to improve with a real bulb inside and colored water? it will improve flyes catch and give different light effect.
Anti-Fly Sphere. The use of a plastic bag full of water hanging from the ceiling of several taco kiosks on the streets, is a traditional way to scare flies away in most of the food markets on urban Mexico. The refraction of the water, amplifies the colors and movements for the sensible eyes of a fly reflected on this sphere, scaring it away, making it the perfect sustainable pesticide, on a way that the insect remains harmless and the food is free of flies. Dimensions: 4" x H. 7.7".

nice idea
May be busted, but I've seen the bags work their magic many times.
Lucky I read how it really works. I was grossed out thinking that it actually traps the flies. Imagine cleaning the thing if that were the case...
using water in a plastic bag has been difinitively proven not to be effective
