Fastrob, I own and drive a defender 90 and I'm afraid to say the design is not cutting edge and the workmanship isn't great. They are however, stunningly good cars and you would not believe what they're capable of! Ralph Lauren owns one!
Nice, For the price you would pay for a 1997 or up so you get rid of the mechanical gauged nightmare, I would personally go after a H1 Hummer with a 6.5 diesel..
I love the way they look. But unless you're offroading with your mechanic you better park it in your lawn and admire it. It falls apart inside and out an the engine won't go over 65k miles without some serious attention let alone minor issues. We've had 3 of these for the dunes and they fall apart like Legos. I'd go with the H1 Hummer as well. They take a serious beating and they're dirt cheap to fix.
I spent 10 years fixing these, I love how it looks but its the most uncomfortable poorly built vehicle ive come across. Really poor interior space for such a large heavy vehicle and really expensive. Id love to say otherwise as its british but you shouldnt allow companies to get away with bad design and build quilty
The hummer was as bad i fixed them for a bit at 29 palms on exercise with the army, we had them on loan. I was expecting to never touch them as I heard they were indestructable. Unfortunatly we had to put in 16 hour days to keep up with the breakdowns. Toyota and Nissan have the most reliable and capable offroad machines old school hi lux would be my choice
X6 fuck you!

matt22, "I love how it looks but its the most uncomfortable poorly built vehicle ive come across. Really poor interior space for such a large heavy vehicle and really expensive". Have to agree with matt here. I love the idea and looks, but there are serious counters.
There are a lot of downfalls with the defenders design, but I will tell you one thing. I got into a nasty accident in one 2 years ago, and its the honest truth that the other car was the one that got totally ripped up and we only had dents, the bumper and lights to replace. The 90 can pretty much withstand anything but a double decker or a tank.
