I wouldn't mix checked with tartan, but the bowtie itself with the jacket looks superb.
Actually I like the tartan with the checked. It really makes the bow tie pop and gives it a "one off" look. The last thing you ever want is for your tie to just blend into your shirt and look like some soggy mash.
