Unlucky Heroine, it's possibly the worst book I have ever read. I can only think that it is seen as a great because people have been told it is and refused to formulate their own opinion. The only thing that remotely dragged me into this book was an immense distaste and at times hatred of every single character.
JMLP, i disagree. this book doesn't give you the warm fuzzies because it's not supposed to. sure, it's pretty over-analyzed and dissected in terms of it's symbolism, but it's great because it's a period piece with themes that are still relevant- the destructive pursuit of the American dream is the big one here, whereas in Catcher in the Rye it's that intense fear of growing up. not to mention Fitzgerald's beautiful writing (says the English teacher).
haha BillyCasper :) eoneil20 It's the first book I've read in a long time that I couldn't bear to read, it just didn't grab me at all (Apart from Dickens at school which I found pretty crappy as well). Nick is supposed to be at least a bit sympathetic but just comes across as naive and irritating. However, the fact that every character was an absolute idiot (have you listened to Daisy?) was not the only reason I disliked the book. The action was slow and uninteresting, the majority of it seemed irrelevant and I didn't really like his writing style at all. tbh I much preferred 'A View from the Bridge' or even 'Of Mice and Men' if you're talking American Dream. And this is before we even analysed it :P. I do however accept your opinion but it seems that books like this and 'War and Peace' just get assumed to be great works of fiction without any thought or sometimes having even been read.
This is one of my favorite books of all time. Part of that may be because I read it way back in high school with an amazing english teacher who pointed out the beauty and sadness of the story. I've read it over and over since and it still amazing each time
I will ALWAYS fancy this book!! great book!
It is a very good book!
The Pretty Good Gatsby is pretty good.
Read it. Recommend it.
Haha, I'm reading this book for school in a few weeks. What a coincidence!
