@Acable12 that thing in the picture is the harbor mouth beacon at the end of the newport side jetty that forms the harbor mouth. You can't see the jetty, even though it's massive, because the wave is breaking over it. The jetty, made by the army corps of engineers back in the 30s, makes a wedge shape with the break line of the beach (hence the name) and this forces the swell to pitch up into an "A frame" that increases the size of the waves by several feet. The waves are fast, thick and unforgiving. When I lived in newport they had an entire ward of the hospital dedicated to neck injuries suffered just at the wedge. Only the best can surf it.
