Designed by Naoto Fukasawa for Onao, the SIWA collection is a perfect marriage of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design.
The collection is produced using a planetary sounding material call Noaron, which is made from wood pulp and polyolefin using age-old Japanese paper manufacturing techniques. Soft to the touch and quite flexible, the material is also extremely durable, surprisingly strong (it has been tested up to 20 lbs), and water resistant. In time, the paper takes on the qualities of worn-in leather and will exhibit a unique patina.
The name SIWA, pronounced 'shiwa,' means wrinkle in Japanese. It references the inherent creasing of the material after production, while also being a play on the word 'washi,' the ancient Japanese paper.
Naoto Fukasawa is widely regarded as one of Japan's leading designers. His designs are often referred to as minimal, though like his British counterpart Jasper Morrison, they might be better considered 'super normal'—distillations of form beyond aesthetics, objects that manage to transcend their apparent normalcy.
The family-run Onao is situated in Yamanashi Prefecture, a rural area near Mount Fuji that has served as home to washi-making for generations.
